‌Reading the Space _ Chen, Dai goang

What is a space for human? Human live their lite depending on method to understand spaces. This space understanding doesn't mean human knows and sees space through recognition but instead he or she recognizes it through previous recognition. There fore space is connected to human behaviors recognizing space. Dr. Wolfgang Meisenheimer, a doctor of architecture in German, from a his major book < Choreography of space >, said “Space is choreography to conduct human” "Choreography means a formative art of body and his < Choreography of space >determines a width of movement inside frame in which space is invisible and makes a movement like a beautiful choreography through choreography of space. A space is a stage for ego, flows of emotion and imagination in sub themes such as an empty place, no-existence, gap, incident and routine life, familiar but unfamiliar place and diversities and also it is a place where people stimulate their memories and make forms, desire and ideology and ego is concentrated. From an empty space, imagination penetrates into an gap between emotion and understanding and the enlarged imagination makes it not a conventional space but a close- communicating space with people's internal word through playing acts.
A speculation for these spaces are founded from characteristics of an artist, chen, Daigoang's art work in C.C.C project < Reading the Space > Here l attempts to find the characteristics of his art work by focusing on method to approach spaces through his art worlds.
Chen, Daigoang has been producing wooden architectural structures in systematic spaces such as galleries and art centers and outdoor or public spaces since 2001. The artist, paying attentions to geometry of places, architecture and surrounding environments, connected his works with them based on places and relations of structures. More over its methods were very extemporaneous. In addition he deploys his ideas to be expressed based on the artist’s view points. This may be regarded as the case “Approaching spaces as a place where the artist is focused on ego. The artist doesn’t make something necessary for spaced, but instead he focused on what and how he can enjoy as he becomes a main entity. Like this, space could be a stage where emotional experiences are achieved.
For artists, work is a making. From his expression, “I am not producing artistic art works. I am just a person who researches space. People regard me as an artist only because what I’d like to do is art. My action (work) is not work of art. Therefore, I am not an artist” In order words, the artist, Chen, Daigoang is a person who has interests in space and his researches on space are connected to thinking over how his work could joyfully exist in space. Actually these can be understood through his installation procedure. He first observes space. He stays there for few days and then catches distinctive historical aspects or flows of atmosphere which are built by those who had breathed there. The flow of atmosphere is an overall vitality which can be only by the artist's sense. He intuitively builds structures by materials well matched with structure as if he draws pictures. First of all, he lays several wooden pieces on the bottom to determine a location where a structure is built. By repeating a cycle tat the wooden pieces go into gap between overlapped pieces and goes out, he completes a frame of structure with the pieces folded one by one. In this case, he makes curves by twisting wooden pieces flexibly and then completes a architectural structure as a robust substance. Although a drawing chart which is elaborately calculated for all processes seems to exist, there isn’t any specific directional aspect for him. In other words, it’s very much like he draws a picture on canvas by wooden materials. Like this, the artist doesn't concern what could be realized on a given space nor pursue for any consistent problematic aspect and issue. Therefore, concepts that conventional artists have in their minds are not important and special for the artist, Chen, Daigoang.
In this exhibition < Reading the Spaces >the artist, Chen, Daigoang erected geometric and linear structure on rooftop of Space Can using wood. This means he analyzed architectural characteristics for a space named space can and completed a form which changed scale of objet inspired by architectural forms of Seongbukdong formed primarily based on space, namely a method which inserts new structures into existing structure that have been changed tor a long time. More over has also shows unfamiliar spaces by inserting new objet into existing architectures. Structural from of space can shows movement and directional characteristics which are expressed by curves not by a simple grids and the structure was made inspired by architectural from appeared at outer appearance of space. This architectural structure is laid inspired by curved alley curved between house and house. You can see new landscapes slowly in gap between trees when walk into this   structure as if you follow a sloped road 1m high from ground. This reminds audiences of attentions by assigning directional on the front landscape and consequently the artist absorbs even a landscape not belonging to the art works by making people re-recognize surrounding environments which have not been previously recognized.
Light, ‘not-substance objet' which is primarily used by the artist's works stimulates emotional areas of audience and this light contains stories in space being used to induce experiences from audience. This light results in humans visual and recognized reactions and makes them recognize that space and from are not fixed one but changing object.
Especially effects of light which makes people recognize an existence in dark night exposes a site where space and structure is inter-related just like an organism. Amazingly, these materials for structures, from, light and experience-inducing equipments are applied for expressing factors to create playful space as ‘not-substance objet”. This means the artist’s playful behaviors are transferred through experience of audience.
The artist re-discovered space as various meanings from his imagination. He has dialogues and communicates with space as if he meets people. This is his artistic activities and also a method to realize his works and an approaching method to space. Main themes appeared in the artist works are affected by life nearby him. This shows state of his thinking over current situation and also it is one of methods for self-examinations concentrating on something and meeting real ego in his minds. Results of the artist’s artistic activities shown in space for 10 days are believed to become a place of opportunities to extend 5 senses through audience’s visual experiences.

‌Artist’s Interview
Pack, Shin young l Space CAN Curator
Q1. Could you tell us about an artist's attitude when you see art production and also about your overall art world?
For me, the meaning for an artist is not a will to choose this job but retrograding self isolations which has been extended from plays which I’d like to do my early days and. As l had been growing up to become an adult, I rejected duties to share my roles in a typical society very much like role of a toothed wheel which people conventionally have to select for their jobs. Until now, I may be an adult child who plays with Lego. When it comes to attitudes toward art production, there is only thing play left when small branches of reasons are all removed. I think that human beings and communication with social which modern art tells us belong to subsidiary attributes of arts not belonging to goals of art itself.
When I was born and raised, Korea under baby booming and had its best values for reconstructing economy and all people in the country were gathering at Seoul looking for productions. There fore Seoul almost became a construction site. Many of adults in my family circles took part in construction site for their jobs. To some degree, current my work is a consequence of that era. As l was passing through puberty, l felt like sort of sense of betrayal against reality and social.
That was a collision with personal values and social values. Overall conflicts in society such as human's negative aggregated sentiments and teachers who plainly want money, retired teachers in national teacher's association and inhuman behaviors suppressing freedom and ignoring personal values for totalitarianism forced me to escape from society. That led me reading and meditation and also made me closed to other books rather than conventional education classed. Those books were mostly metaphysical themes such as philosophy, religions, ancient cultures and para-sciences. Current my art works are a combination of those and also they are most natural results. For me, art works are sort of objects that randomly are soaked with those elements while l rather avoid a specific purpose for producing art works.
Q2. I know you did artworks at Germany for 10 years after you graduated from university, which means you had faced various artistic and cultural senses over oriental and western systems. So could you tell us about artistic and cultural differences between Korea and Germany which you think? And if those differences affected your art works, what are they? and how are they expressed?
Western philosophy is materialistic and logical positivism. Political power of Western countries made their scientific achievement practical tools for expansionism combined with Catholic. As the results, they transplanted their culture all over the world which need and they accumulated wealth from exploited resources. Germany couldn't actively take part in this expansionism and consequently brought about war but finally they failed.
After World War ll, as German was divided into West and East and it achieved miracle of Rhein River combined with tremendous PR by Cold War between USA and Soviet. At that time, they successfully established cultural and artistic policies. However, Korea had make efforts only for economic growth because of its political aspects while re construction of arts and cultures were ignored. As the results, arts and social positions for artists were pushed into edges.
In Germany, artists have their position as one of social members. As jobs, they are protected by national laws with insurance of artists. Moreover, they are classified as class of social knowledge while they share other academic achievements cooperating with others and also they are recognized as entities of consumption. I think that national sentiments affected by concepts governing society.
Those concepts are outcomes from philosophy and Germany is familiar with discussions about outcomes coming from personal characteristics started from independent self as the result of esthetic insights. Korea's tradition which had been focused on philosophy of Confucianism highlights harmonized personal rather than personal characteristics, which means the society ignores artistic personality. In other worlds this concept has made Korean think that a very distinctive personality disrupts orders of societies. National policies which have bee focused on economic productivities overlooked importance of philosophical huge discussions and cultural art policies. As the result, traditional cultures and history of arts became isolated while Western art-centric market systems are introduced. In Korea, there is no consumption of higher cultures. This is believed that people annihilate their culture and give up the future. What Korean cultural assets might exist after 100 years is a very critical issue in this time. Under the environment that Korean artists are pushed into edge, life of artists is a life of frustration. It's because that artists are not able to concentrate art itself.
o3. We know your art works are realized not just on so-called artistic systematic spaces such as art centers and galleries but also on public spaces such as parks and other leisure space. I'd like to ask your methods to approach spaces when you are planning works. Tell us about Space Can in connection with READING THE SPACE which is a theme of CCC project.
First of all, my art works are not opposition concepts against white cubes not the direction of conscious public parts. They are not related to history of Western art at all. Until now, some of critics classified my works into flows of Western art history rather than contents itself in their papers. However, positive and negative thinking over my works are not concerned me at all. And as answers to question about approaching space are related to forms of structures, some of answers are included in answers of Question 4. In terms of my personal views, as Space Can is divided by unnecessary sculptured elements, I think that the space is not intended for exhibitions.
Q4. Could you tell us what geometric structure appeared in your art works means? And is there any specific artist or artistic trends and architectural forms which affected your art production?
My art works are basically divided into space-related work and independent one. Space-related works are varying depending on design at exhibition environment and given conditions. To name it, this works is “Space-related architecturalsculptures or installation works" which reads historic incidents, structure of spaces and its flow and then reacts them sensitively.
Within these environments, my art works are perfectly completed through interference of audience and experiences. In this case, my art works play roles of media so that audiences have interests in surrounding environments and re- recognize them. Through this procedure, even landscapes other than art work itself became absorbed into parts of art works. Independent works are divided into 2 aspects again. This means the art work produces an artificial landscape and sculpture.
Sculpture is a monument without any purpose which is affected and created by a series of Ziggourat, shrine or other architectures or life necessities for human lite. This open imitates forms of architectures, furniture or house goods. Things affecting my art works may become all that modern people encounter in their daily life. Their major parts are soaked with life while they are method for my self-reflection. I use arts as a tool through l submerged into something and meet my real ego. In that procedure, as I continuously pass through a course to deny myself, I can't stick to a certain form. That's why art work can't have some consistency
Q5. If you have any art work under new plan or if you' have any areas that you d like to challenge, tell us about them. In addiction tell us about your future plans.
Almost every time, lam used to think every thing in connection with art work in my time. In other words, I work from the time of getting up to seeping on bed. Basically, this habit seems to be continued until I die, lam schedule to move to Yang-pyeong and there l 'm going to my works which have been sketched so far into models one by one. I will continue to find new ideas and move them to new models and realized them occasionally it possible and will repeat this basic cycle. The most important think in my mind among them will be realization against me. This means conscious state about everything. lam conscious feeling energy surrounding me at every moment.
I won't forget the fact that there exist different method and mean at every moment.
