This winter was especially cold. I went all over Daebudo looking for ideas. Due to the cold weather, the frozen tidal flat stretched out like a salt desert and even the sunlight felt cold. I frowned in the strong sunlight and a boat that sat on a mound came to sight through my glasses.
The boat looked pathetic like a whale that was gasping for breath and waiting for its death on the beach because it didn’t make it when the tide was low. The boat looked like it will collapse with the bottom part of the hull wrecked as if it had been thrown out and the windows of the cabin broken. Why was it thrown out? It didn't end simply end there. My thoughts about the life of the fisherman and the fate of the boat’ made a voyage into my novelistic thoughts with high waves. After passing the islands of seawall, redevelopment, economy, totalitarianism and large public works. I arrived at life. Similar to what the fisherman had wanted to lead, the many lives that want to live in the tidal flat are being thoroughly neglected in front of the greed of humans. I wonder what the owner of the boat is doing now?

It wasn’t difficult to find the boat owner. The owner of a hamba house near the sandpit was chopping a raisin tree with an axe with sharpened bald. He knew who the boat owner was. Sometimes the people from the city hall come to ask about the boat owner, but the village people living close by kept quiet. They didn’t want to get blamed in case the boat owner ends up paying a penalty. Mr. Back mentioned we were from the Gyeonggi Creation Center from the beginning. After passing a narrow path at the top of a hill, a pretty big vegetable garden came to sight. A lady with towel around her head was thinning out weeds. The boat owner was her husband’s younger brother, and it wasn’t difficult to get the boat.

Early in the morning. A twenty-five ton crane arrived to drag out the heavy body. There was a huge commotion made from moving the huge body of a boat to a truck and carrying it to the creation center. The last attempt failed because the wires of an eighteen ton cargo crane broke. I was afraid the the twenty-five ton crane might not be enough, but luckily it ended well. I spent a long time around the scrapped boat. I don’t know how to describe it, but there was like a holiness about the boat as if coming from an old tree at the entrance of the village. I could feel some sort of liveliness that comes from an old thing. It was almost as if it will start a conversation with me. The whole life of the fishing boat. flashed pass me. Including the hammer sound of carpenters who were building the boat flashed pass me. Including the hammer sound of carpenters who were building the boat,
the shaman song wishing the bon voyage of the boat and makgeolli [Korean unrefined rice wine] smell, the wave and fishy smell, and the grievances of fishermen and the smile of those who come back with a full load of fish.

The scrapped boat was born again. The body that was tired from fighting with strong waves and hard labor could rest now, because part of it will be restored and disassembled to turn into a house with a small terrace. If the boat symbolizes the exhausting life that have to go on a voyage, the house represents the sanctuary where you have to return one day.
