The Youngchu Gate of the Gyeongbog palace is in front of the Brain Factory. The Gyeongbog palace lived in the Joseon Dynasty, 600 years ruled the country. The work of a stone wall around the Youngchu Gate was constructed to mimic the appearance. This work takes place in history is the story of countless events.

A Coffer Patterned Black Hole that Gulping Down the Space
Infusing the dusky light, an enormous structure filled the entire Brain Factory. Little wooden blocks that Dai-goang Chen put together in hand eventually swallowed the whole space. Entering the exhibition hall, a spectator is guided to an unknown world through a passage crossing the long space of Brain Factory. This coffer patterned wooden tunnel, opening its mouth to the history of the Gyeongbog palace across the street, is like a four-dimensional exploration pathway that came from the future. The spirit of Chosun dynasty which persisted for five hundred years is led through the Youngchu Gate and sucked into the coffer patterned black hole of Dai-goang Chen. In this sense, past, present and future exist simultaneously in Dai-goang Chen’s works. The meanings of time and space are deconstructed naturally through the process of creation then raises as the physical properties of the outcome, which becomes the actual existence where the spirit exists in reality as the quantum physics theory. Last two months I have tried communicating and to establishing the full interview with the artist through e-mail. It was another chance to confirm my thought that ‘an art work is the materialized self of the aura that the creator possesses.’ He did not commit a foolish mistake of limiting his works in words. Throughout the interview, he consistently maintained the viewpoint that his prior interest is on the philosophy that lies within a work rather than the aesthetics. An important matter to him is not the circumstances around but what lies inside him. The confidence that sits on the bottom of his heart may come from intense introspection and long continued philosophical discipline. Inferring to the artist’s attitude of a seeker after truth, for him, working is a mean of practicing moderation and freeing himself from the chaotic world. Working is not only a purposing to create an art work but also way of knowing himself and way of living life. The key point is the pleasure acquired through process, not only the outcome of it. It is opened to the inner self; therefore there is no narrative in it. Trifling explanation by words is not needed. “My philosophy is simple. I look inside myself and find an arrow pointing to a certain direction. Follow there. Trust myself. Ignore the unnecessary thought. Unnecessary thought could be anything: living, earning, and worrying about something that has not even happened yet. I just did what I wanted as I like.” –from the interview In this exhibition, the artist presents an architectural structure built with black veneer wood strip surrounding walls and ceiling from the entrance. The distance between each strip is fixed so that the light coming from the gap enables the structure to breathe with the space as a united organism. It seems that wood, the main material he used in his work, was chosen because it was familiar to him from his childhood. His artistic field turns to a new stage from the year 2002 when he first made the enormous wooden structure. “It came out of nowhere. I don’t really know what inspired me to do so. The name of the work was ‘A Hearing Aid’ in German……. It was an opportunity for me to hear my own inner voice. Then I thought, ‘this is it! I could live an exciting life with it.’” –from the interview Dai-goang Chen’s metaphysical sculptures have emphasis on reinforcing the energy of the place, rather than stand of its own. Since his works are space-based, finding a good place becomes a starting point of working. He believes that the more is he fulfilled by the conversation with himself the better is he able to communicate with others. The others are the mirrors for him to stare at himself from the opposite side, and also depictions of lives that ruminate over this world. State of being ‘one becomes others, others becomes one,’ ‘one becomes whole, whole becomes one,’ ‘existence is absence and absence is existence,’ or maybe ‘uncertainty is far more certain’: these things could be the key factor of his work.
