‌A “Twisted Space,” Generated along the Invisible Force

Peik Kiyoung, Director of Curatorial Bureau, Seoul Museum of Art

"The flow of this space has come from the shape of a mountain, the terrain of the land, or my own experience of contacting with nature. Although it is a space that I have created, it can be a manifestation of the shape of nature that has already been existing in myself. I am just following its current." Chen Dai Goang
For the last seven years, Chen Dai Goang has been creating a diversity of spaces using wood as a material. During his time at the Kunstakademie Münster, he installed Das Hoerrohr, Die Terrasse, and Der Leuchttrum at the campus of the school. When the artist installed Der Holzweg in Bergkamen in Ruhr, Germany, his work manifested its site-specific nature in a more pronounced way. (In German, the word Holzweg has multiple meanings. It literally means a path in the woods. However, the word is used as a metaphor for a wrong path, strange direction, or unexpected path. With the work Holzweg, Chen Dai Goang created a space within another space as its inside skin, similar to the concept of the inside skin in Ayurveda. In Ayurvedic thinking, the human body is made of the outside skin and inside skin. Here, the inside skin means the intestines.) His early works had characteristics of an architectural structure extended from being a sculpture and could be used as a regular terrace and a bridge crossing the waters. The viewers could experience light, scent, and the surrounding environment in the space he had created.
In Das Auessere des Inneren, which was installed at the Wewerka Pavillon Münster, the artist also incorporated light as a very important element in the space, installing lightings on the work for the viewers to see it during the night. While working on the work, Chen realized that the space changes by light in a variety of ways and that the viewers were also part of his work. Later, he transformed his practice. His early works where he wrapped living trees with other materials were developed into Der Raum und Atem. In Wasser, Baum und Feuer, he created an installation that floats on the water. Although it is not impossible to systemically analyze the transformation of Chen Dai Goang's work, the current essay will not delve into such a direction. The artist does not appreciate his works being explained through pedantic vocabulary. For him, a work of art is something that can become a powerful symbol only by its figurative composition. In this sense, the artist has a sense of repulsion toward the analytical language that tries to explain his work. He thinks that analysis and deconstruction unable us to see the whole and its holistic picture in the end. Thus, Chen wants this work to defy analysis and be received as a holistic entity.
The installation process of Chen's work is very dynamic. When he enters certain space, he first sees the current of the space. The current is not something 'figurative' but 'intangible,' which is certain holistic energy that cannot be described through words. As the artist arranges one or two wooden objects by the energy flowing in the space, the energy corresponds to the objects and also escapes between them. As the artist twists a long branch that crosses the objects that have been laid out, it envisions the shape of the space by standing with its elasticity or flexibly bending itself. In such a way, the space that he creates is as natural as a drawing generated by the elasticity of wood. He composes space by layering wooden materials and solidly attach them in a space he desires, after twisting them. Being a solid material, wood draws a space as if it was a pliable line. In fact, all these figures come from the inherent materiality of wood.
The natural current is not only related to the artist's work but also to how he gazes his life. "As all things in the world endlessly change, art also evolves. The word 'progress' does not befit the situation. Thus, art should not remain in the institutional agreement of its time. I wish my work to be a movement that is capable of creating the original energy of life from the promise of art or its institutional evolution, not by speculating them. However, young contemporary artists realize the current and trend of contemporary art with no regards to their inner motivation, and they try to be part of them. That is no more than meaningless." While he explains, he looks like an ascetic who discovers himself through art. Chen confesses, "I train myself and find my path though art. I think there are countless ways to find one's path. In that sense, creating art is one of many ways for me to find my life. People ask about my labor, "Don't you feel difficult?" But I play as I work on my art. When I am not working on my art, I am not in the state of 'complete rest.'" According to what he says, it seems evident that for Chen, artistic practice is a state where work and life are not separated. Since the industrialization, 'labor' for us has been an economic value that was identified with productivity. Instead of contributing to self-realization, labor has been doing much toward the isolation of the self since we never stopped working. However, Chen Dai Goang's labor is something close to 'play,' and 'play' is a creative process that does not only help us realize ourselves but also give us curiosity through which we learn a lot of things.
For over a month, the artist worked on creating 'a twisted space' with wooden materials in the basement space of Community Space Litmus in the Borderless Village in Wongok-dong, Ansan. From our everyday space crammed with artificial objects that are straight and flat, Chen Dai Goang imagines surfaces that are twisted, uneven, and irregular. Here, the 'twist' does not imply an expectable structure. Rather, it is close to a shape that is unexpectable and can never be fully represented. To explain this, Chen takes an example. "One can build a patch of grass and a path, but he cannot prevent a path to appear on the grass. The new path on the grass is one that the person who planned the existing path could not foresee." Chen Dai Goang wants to leave such paths in his work. The current exhibition takes place in a multicultural space in Wongok-dong, a place where diverse people from different countries are mingling with each other. In this rapidly changing place, we witness the process where a heterogeneous variation of life is generated. Chen Dai Goang's work will generate a tilted imbalance along the historical and social 'twist' of this space.
Peik Kiyoung
"The shape I want to make has already been there before I conceived it, and it has already been in the elasticity of the material that I was holding in my hands. I create my work as I am taught by the space and I put nails on my work as the materials instruct me. As the moves of Taekkyeon or melodies played by Gayageum follow natural gestures and rhythms, the surface of the spaces I create runs along the surface of nature and space around it."
